N.B: THIS IS A LECTURE DELIVERED BY OGBENI TOOGUN SKRTEL NIYI

To start with, we must first get ourselves acquitted with the key words in the topic of discussion and they are;

DIASPORA: This to me is simply a group of people or person disseminated outside of their homeland for whatever reasons. And it is necessary to state that it is not until you leave the country before you can be tag 'someone leaving in diaspora'. An Iwo citizen leaving in Abuja can be tag 'a person living in diaspora'

NATION BUILDING/ COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: this again to me is the way of impacting positively and helping over the conditions that affect the lives of the people in our community/nation (whether the community/nation of birth or the community/nation you reside).

Listed below are enumerated reason while people live in diaspora..

- Search for greener pasture and means of livelihoods.
- Insecurity, war and unrest.
-  Instability in government policies.
-  Transferring in the place of work.
- Some believe in spiritual attack.

More often than not, people leave the role of building a nation or development of a community to only those in power (political, traditional, religion), this is probably caused by ignorance, low level of education, in-exposure and the believe that those in positions of power are strikingly rich and therefore all the problems of a nation should be shouldered squarely by them. This is wrong and it is not only wrong, it is one of the factors that push our nation, Nigeria to the disdain-able situations we find ourselves today.

Listed below are very few roles I think those in Diaspora should play in building and developing our nation.

*HELP IN GROWTH OF RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP - knowing fully well that corruption is the political and leadership level is one of the bane of under-development in our community and nation at large, those in diaspora who are exposed to a different style of doing things and running government abroad ought to know better because they are privileged to have the advantage of exposure and a basis of comparison and evaluation. With this, much is expected from them in nation building.

If they are privileged to be home and hold a political or leadership position (appointed or elected) or perhaps they have close allies holding a political or leadership position, their wealth of experience and way of doing things they've learnt abroad are expected to be inculcated into their community of nation.

*CREATING A STRONG LINK BETWEEN THE 2 PLACES- One of the important role of Nigerians in Diaspora in nation building is the creation of economical, cultural and social link between their home places and the places they disseminate to. There is need, in fact an urgent one for those in diaspora to preach in length our positive economical religion, cultural and social practises to the foreigners. This will create a good image for our nation/community in the eyes of the world.

They can as well help in exporting and advertising our locally(home) made good to help our economy especially at this time of crunch economic hardship.

However, all these must be done in tandem with their rules, regulations and constitution. These may in turn lead to foreigner coming down here to invest, the economic gain this can give us is surely not a small feat.

However before I conclude, some of the aforementioned points are the reasons we need to appreciate those who are from our community living abroad.

Look closely at people like Dr. Gbenga Salawu (Iwe o kari), Admiral Rufai. Chief Lukman Badru and many more. Their impact in our community cannot be despise. And with then you tend to understand how much those in diaspora can impact into our community.

Before I give room for questions and answers, I want to thank everybody for following my little submission. the submission are purely my thoughts and they can be subjected to criticism, correction and even outright rejection. Thank you.
